The newest addition to our Giclée System
for Art Reproduction: The Pentacon Scan 6000

PENTACON Scan 6000 –
scanner cameras of the latest generation

The multi-functional "PENTACON Scan 6000" range is distinguished in particular by its extremely high optical resolution and relatively short scan time.

Detail reproduction is excellent and true to the original.

The models are available with mounts for both Schneider-Kreuznach and Nikon lenses, and the portfolio also includes a camera equipped with power focus (auto-focus!).

The "PENTACON Scan 6000" is controlled via a PC using "SilverFast AI Studio" software from Lasersoft Imaging. Easy-to-use tools, IT8 colour calibration, ICC profiling and intelligent auto-gradation optimise the image quality and round off the functionality.

Technical data:

Viewfinder type: Single lens reflex
Lens mounts: M39x1, Nikon, Nikon-AF
Focusing: manual, power, auto-focus
Maximum optical resolution: 10,000 x 10,000 pixels per colour
Colour depth: 12 bit (with multi-exposure 14 bit)
Maximum file size: 570 MB
Minimum scan time: 0:31 seconds
Data transfer: USB 2.0

From the Dresden factory in Germany that made countless Exacta and Practika cameras comes the newest addition to our Giclée System – The Scan 6000.

Featuring a 10,000 by 10,000 by full three primary colour scanner (that's 300mp in total) this machine produces the ultimate images for fine art or still life reproduction.

The Scan 6000 is a high technology hand-assembled instrument with Schneider M39 lens mount. GMS now supplies a selection of matched Schneider APO Componon lenses and extension tubes for the machine along with the industry standard SilverFast AI Studio software to create an image capture system that’s unique in Australia.

Be the first in your area to have the Pentacon 6000.

Lets face it, everybody has a wide format printing machine and there is very little business value in buying a new model as most of the claimed improvements exist in brochures and not in real life. Customers just don't perceive the difference between printer models and in these tough times it's hard to justify additional commitments.

Being the first in your area to have the Pentacon 6000 could easily change your business overnight. The machine is of modern design and far easier to use than previous scan backs that were just "Lipstick on a Pig" being made as film substitutes on older bellows driven technical cameras. These machines offer reasonable reproduction but suffer high failure rates with art as they have shallow depth of focus and almost certain short term obsolescence even though the cost is often over 50%- 100% higher than the Pentagon scan series.

Superior performance to conventional digital equipment.

Similarly art and still life images copied with conventional digital equipment do not provide anywhere near the price performance of hand made scan cameras. Even 60mpixel medium format machines that cost more than 4 times the price of the Scan 6000, result in much smaller enlargements as their sensors only resolve one primary colour per pixel and the resulting full colour image is interpolated.

The Pentacon 6000 is built from the ground up around the smaller and better corrected image circle of the Schneider Kreuznach APO Componons and a solid body that can't flex and make out of focus images. Connected via a single industry standard USB cable the machine can scan in a mere 30 seconds and allows repeated scans of a single image to give higher dynamic range that is needed to capture highlights in oil painting or in smaller reflective items like jewellery.

Tax deductible with a 2-year warranty.

Finally in these tough times GMS is offering the complete Pentacon 6000s and your selection of Schneider lenses and solid extension tubes for full operating lease (subject to approval). That means the complete item is off the balance sheet and tax deductible over a five year period. GMS is offering a two year warranty on the camera, lens system and software along with an additional 8 years parts availability. GMS also offers next day change over service and same day call back for technical advice including lighting advice and software service.

Are you finding it a bit of a struggle at the moment? Are your customers taking their work to your competitors who have reproduction abilities? If so, now is the time to consider how the Pentacon 6000 system combined with an Australian operating lease could improve your business.

Commercial Edition Canvas at the same great price.

The weak Aussie dollar has meant inevitable price rises on some canvas products but GMS has taken action to introduce a new no compromise Canvas product at the same $/square metre that has been offered for many years.

InkjetPro Commercial Edition for Pigment

InkjetPro Commercial Edition (for pigment) uses the same tight 2:1 weave as its cotton/polyester brother, Premium Edition, but maintains the same $/ square metre cost as before the crash in the $AU due to several key factors.

These factors include longer 15.2 metre rolls, limited widths and removal of the polyester (oil) content. The receptor technology features zero optical brighteners yet the canvas is a bright white exceeding ISO 102.

InkjetPro Commercial Edition has excellent and similar crack resistance to its cotton/polyester brother, Premium Edition, yet it is softer and more flexible. The 2:1 tight weave makes for relatively low shrinkage for a cotton product and the finish is seedless.

If you have long term price commitments and you can operate with longer rolls in 24 and 44 inch then InkjetPro Commercial Edition for pigment is the answer.

Introducing InkjetPro
Commercial Edition – for ECO Solvent

$210 for the 50 inch roll (while stocks last).

Many solvent canvas products are not much more than tent fabric on rolls but not Commercial Edition for ECO Solvent. This 100% cotton, seedless product features the same 2:1 weave as our InkjetPro Premium Edition and Commercial Edition pigment products but it is coated glossy for use by eco solvent machines.

The 2008 product is available in a natural finish, 50 inch rolls at 15.2 metres. The product is a hefty 350gsm and 18 mil thick. This is a dedicated water resistant ECO solvent coating with a higher gloss so it lifts the blacks in solvent printing far more than those of satin finishes. The coating is highly crack resistant and in many cases this product is an environmentally friendly alternative to indoor vinyl signage.

The InkJetPro Commercial Edition for Solvent will become available in 60 inch and high white during 2009 so talk to GMS if you need currency insured high quality ECO solvent canvas printing.

The test results are in: Aquathane–UV exceeds 102 Years!

GMS has completed testing Aquathane-UV in combination with InkjetPro Premium Edition and Epson 9800 Matt Ultrachrome Ink. The tests were completed without the usual protective glass layer as canvas is displayed in the open.

Our tests are conducted independently by the Image Permanence Institute (IPI) in the USA. The combination of Aquathane-UV, Inkjet Pro Premium Edition Canvas and Epson Ultrachrome ink did not reach endpoint (failure) in all 81 colour patches tested, including unprinted canvas, in the equivalent of 102 years exposure.

Unlike many ink makers who simply release a number in years, GMS believes in full disclosure of the results where it is needed, such as with museum work. GMS will make available the full lab reports to those with a genuine need to know in December 2008.

All current GMS supplied canvas products, with the exception of the InkjetPro Commercial Edition which is currently being tested, have been subjected to accelerated light fade tests.

You can use GMS supplied products with confidence if coated with Aquathane-UV and printed with pigment inks.

Our way of saying thanks for your support throughout 2008!

Yes, you read it correctly!

Over the XMAS New Year period GMS is offering rolls of its top-of-the-line cotton/poly InkJetPro Premium Edition for just $35 a roll plus GST and delivery with the purchase of any 44 inch product.

That’s the very same canvas that achieved the 102 year permanence rating at the IPI so this isn't one of those end of life run out offers.

This is our way of saying "Merry Christmas" to those that have supported us throughout the year.

GMS Camera of the Year: Canon PowerShot G10

GMS CAMERA of the YEAR—
CANON PowerShot G10

$610 +gst — delivered.

Well everybody makes a big noise about digital SLR's but here at GMS we travel the world testing equipment and in 2008 there is an easy winner – the Canon PowerShot G10.

We suggest that every wide format owner and serious snapper purchase a G10 system, with the telephoto lens and especially the underwater housing. This is the cameras that's small enough to be taken everywhere yet packs enough punch to make wide format enlargements.

The G10 specs read well but the proof is in the prints and it's embarrassing for many owners of expensive DSLR equipment. When used correctly this $600 point and shoot machine can make canvas prints that are near indistinguishable from machines that cost 100 times the price.

From the Great Barrier Reef to the dusty Australian outback, Canon's custom underwater housing has got you covered.

The real magic in the G10 comes with its little known custom underwater housing. Australian outback dust or beach sand often see DSLR owners leave their equipment in the bag fearing an expensive sensor clean.

The G10's pressure case is no glorified plastic bag. It’s a proper 40 metre rated pressure case that allows the use of all the controls including zoom and full internal flash coverage via a diffuser that’s supplied in the box

So, carry your 10 KG DSLR and lens set everywhere with you, risking family disapproval at the bulk and all the attention it draws OR operate in stealth mode with a Canon G10, sacrifice very little over larger kit.

GMS is supplying Australian warranted Canon G10's, their telephoto lenses and filter adapters, cases and underwater housings to all GMS customers at the following prices, which includes shipping.

Canon G10 - $610 (ex GST)
Case for G10 – $75.00 (ex GST)
Conversion lens adaptor for G10 - $48 (ex GST)
Telephoto Lens for G10 – $142.00 (ex GST)
Underwater housing for G10 - $280.00 (ex GST)

Price Rises — Not all Gloom and Doom!

As many of you may know the $AU is languishing at it lowest rate for many years against the majority of currency's in the developed world.

While many single source importers have increased prices across the board, GMS sources product from several geographies so not all prices have increased. GMS won't announce an across the board increase that would see existing stock become unnecessarily expensive.

If you are sensitive to product pricing it's important to call us, if we haven't already called you, and we can advise which product types are effected and by how much.

As an example of the variation, the extremely popular InkjetPro Premium Edition will increase in price (From December 1) by 0% to about 14% depend on roll width, yet its brother InkjetPro Commercial Edition remains the same price per square meter as 2004 canvas levels. The solvent canvas products are in fact selling for about $40 a roll less than 2004 levels.

The USA made Moab by Legion paper range of products has increased by an average of 20%. The UK made Eterna range of art papers and natural canvas types will rise in Q1 of 2009 by a lesser amount.

Overall canvas and liquid coating prices are less than half that seen when the $AU was at similar levels in 2001 so there are few reasons for gloom in the canvas printing industry. If your supplier/importer has put up all prices and you can no longer meet forward commitments talk to GMS about its InkJetPro Commercial Edition products.

Finally while common DSLR camera and lens prices have risen sharply, finance rates have similarly fallen. Contrary to public belief, there is no shortage of finance available to our industry so there isn't a better time to purchase equipment that delivers a difference the paying public can actually see - like the Pentacon 6000s.

Christmas Closing Times:

Closing times for the 2008 Christmas period are:

Wed 24th Dec - Tues 6th Jan 2008 inclusive.

Please be aware that courier services will be overloaded up until Christmas and therefore delivery delays are inevitable.

Dear All,

We would like to thank all our customers for their continued custom throughout 2008. It has been yet another great year for Giclee printing. We farewell 2008 on a high as it has been a strong and buoyant year for our industry, despite business confidence being dampened in the last quarter by the global financial crisis. We move forward into 2009 with a positive but cautious outlook placing an even stronger focus on greater efficiencies at Giclee Media Supplies.

Christmas is upon us and despite the world gloom and doom, it is a time for families, fun and festivity. We hope a photo printed on canvas, or an art print wrapped and waiting under the Christmas tree will bring joy and inspiration to many.

Warmest wishes for the festive season!

Anne-Marie Connelly
and the staff at Giclee Media Supplies.
