Coating Inkjet Canvas Print

Apollo Spray Gun

All forms of inkjet printable canvas not presented under glass requires a coating of liquid laminate in order to protect them from chemical contamination and abrasion.

While there are many ways to liquid laminate canvas none is better than a true High Volume Low Pressure Spray System (HVLP). HVLP spray systems don’t use compressors but supply air with constant pressure turbines. The spray goes where you want it, on the canvas and not up your nose or in the air. HVLP systems can be used in confined spaces without spray booths and legislation is being passed around the world to mandate their use to reduce environmental pollution from over spray.

Giclee Media Supplies is recommending the Apollo spray systems as they apply all the GMS laminates without the need to dilute with water. The spray is controllable down to very fine details and there are no complex air mixture controls. The clean up is very fast, just spray with pure water and the pot load is a full litre, enough for many large canvas prints. Smaller pots are available.

When using an HVLP gun you will notice the canvas is almost instantly touch dry and edge cracking from gross over lamination is greatly reduced or eliminated as the fast dry nature makes it hard for the user to flood the product. Cotton canvas products show reduced shrinkage as the amount of water in the product is greatly reduced.

HVLP guns also virtually eliminate laminate runs and you can spray pure air to fast dry wet patches.

The Apollo HVLP guns can apply all surface finishes including the thicker full Matt types without dilution and the turbine assembly is light enough to be carried to a gallery and be used on a canvas or fine art paper hanging on the wall.

The finish is noticeably better and more consistent than all other machinery tested or sold by GMS.

Roller Kit

InkJetPro GicleeShield is designed for use with our rounded edged foam rollers. You can apply all three GicleeShield finishes types – Gloss, Matt and Satin with these kits.

The kit consists of 160mm high density rounded edges foam rollers on a metal frame. A pan is provided to hold the laminate. Replacement foam rollers, pans and frames are available as separate spare parts.

The use of true HVLP spray guns is the preferable method of preparation for all Giclee prints, however smaller operators may have insufficient space for the installation of spray technology.

Roller liquid laminate application is especially useful when preparing InkJet Pro Image Blocks as rollers apply a much thicker coating that aids both flexibility and impact protection.

As the use of rollers can be more difficult than an HVLP spray GMS has prepared a technical bulletin for the application of GicleeShield II. GicleeShield II is spray gun or “roller ready” straight out of the bottle and does not require any mixing or heating with microwave ovens before canvas preparation.
